Lorton, VA, once home to a prison, is now the fastest growing community in Fairfax County. Lorton Station, a planned community was recently awarded the distinction of a "smart growth" community. The Lorton Town Center recently opened and features shops and restaurants all within walking distance of the homes. The Virginia Railway Express is also located here, providing easy commuting into Alexandria and Washington DC. Other planned communities in Lorton include Lorton Valley, Laurel Hill, Laurel Highlands and Crosspointe, just to name a few. Each features its own unique style and amenities such as parks, tot lots, community center and pools. The new South County secondary school opened in 2005 and is already a leader in acedemics and sports.
One of the most exciting features of Lorton is the 1,200 acre Laurel Hill Park. Currently under development, the park has already opened the Laurel Hill Golf Course and has been linked to the 40 mile Fairfax County Cross County Trail. The Lorton Workhouse is a wonderful venue for artists to create and showcase their artwork. The Workhouse is located in the renovated former prison, which has now been designated a historical landmark (many of the women’s suffragists were held here during the fight for the women’s vote). Other planned projects in the park include an equestrian center, sports complex, picnic areas, nature preserves, outdoor theater and more.
